Tenganan | Taman Ujung | Tirta Gangga | Puri Agung
Original Balinese Village | King's Water Garden | King's Water Palace | Karangasem King's Palace
About this trip
A historical 14th century Bali Aga Village (original Balinese) built on a hill and surrounded by a natural stone wall. Tenganan and Trunyan are some of the villages that maintain a very special communal way of life. The people of Tenganan expertise in creating 'Geringsing' (woven products).
The last king of Karangasem completed this grand palace ca. 1921 but it was intensively damaged by the eruption of mount Agung in 1963 and the earthquake in 1979. The palace is no more and all that remains is a huge pool with statues and portals. The view to the vulcano remains spectacular.
Tirta Gangga is famous for its royal bathing pools. The last king of Karangasem loved water and after completing his former masterpiece at Taman Ujung, he created one in Titra Gangga. It is a place of beauty, peace, and relaxation. This palace has crystal clear spring water swimming pools, ornamental ponds and pretty statues. It is surrounded by beautiful rice paddy-fields.
The King's family compound was built by Anak Agung Gede Jelantik, the King of Karangasem and Stedeholder of the Dutch regime (Maskerdam). The Puri Agung is one of the three palaces which has been restored by his son and is open to visitors.

Sea Salt Panning | Keris making | Goa Lawah | Kerta Gosa
Salt process | ancient weaponry | bat cave | traditional paintings
About this trip
Capturing salt from the sea is never an easy process. The farmers wade into the blue waters and begin their day at twilight. They gather sea water in buckets made from palm leaves and depost it into black sand beds where the hot tropical sun evaporates the water. It takes weeks of hand panning to produce a small batch of sea salt and is most interesting to see.
The way of making Keris is done in a unique way by using very traditional tools (hammer, various shapes of carving nails) and raw materials, either silver or gold, and the intricate motifs on it makes the Keris a very special item. As a cultural masterpiece, Keris is a Balinese traditional weapon that was used for war and eventually recognized as a world cultural heritage.
Pura Goa Lawah's name is derived from thousands of bats that are dwelling on the ceilings and walls of the cave. In the 17th century, the temple was not the only place of worship for the king of Klungkung, but also the place to test the truth of people who broke the law. One legend goes that this cave houses a giant snake! be aware!
One of Klungkung region's heritages that was built in 1686 by the first King of Klungkung Palace is Kerta Gosa. It is part of the complex building of Semarapura Palace. Its uniqueness is that the ceiling of both Bales are decorated with Kaamsan traditional paintings.
